Udawalawe National Park
The Udawalawe National Park is the third most visited national park in Sri Lanka. Being a popular tourist destination, it lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, in close proximity to the most famous Yala National Park. It was mainly constructed to provide as a sanctuary home for the wild animals who were displaced due to the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir situated in the Walawe River.
The park covers a massive 30821 Hectares and was established on 30th June 1972. It is located 165 kilometers from Colombo. Udawalawe National Park is most famed for its inclusion of water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. One can find a variety of flora and fauna and a variety of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles and fish in this national park of Sri Lanka.
Udawalawe is one of the best places to see elephants in Sri Lanka – elephant lovers must visit this excellent national park!
Udawalawe does have leopards (an estimated 1 dozen or so) but the chances of spotting one are extremely rare. If you’re an elephant lover and want a guaranteed sighting of a wild elephant, then I would say head to Udawalawe National Park; in general, the number of people and jeeps in Udawalawe tends to be lower so the park is much less crowded.
